"The Throne of David"

"My Throne" or the "Father's Throne"?

Gary DeMar says: "Jesus told His disciples that they would see a sign that proved He was in heaven, sitting at His Father's right hand (Acts 2:30-36)….He now occupies David's throne in the heavenly Jerusalem" [emphasis mine] (DeMar,"Last Days Madness", p.165).

In regard to "David's throne" we read that Gabriel told Mary the following: "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end" (Lk.1:32,33).

Since Gabriel says that God will give the Lord Jesus the throne of David then that can only mean that David's throne represents "Jesus' throne", a throne that will belong exclusively to Him. However, the following words of the Lord Jesus demonstrate that He is not now sitting in His own throne:

"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne" (Rev.3:21).

The Lord Jesus is not now sitting in His own throne, the "throne of David",but instead is sitting in His Father's throne!

Reign on the Earth

The Lord Jesus will reign in Jerusalem when He reigns from David's throne:

"Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously" (Isa.24:23).

When He will be reigning on the earth His saints will sit with Him in His throne and will reign with Him:

"And hast made us unto our God a kingdom of priests: and we shall reign on the earth" (Rev.5:10).

Since the Christian will reign with Him on the earth and sit with Him on His throne, then it is certain that His throne must be on the earth.

The preterists say that we are now in the kingdom and that Christians are now reigning with Him. However, that could not be true because the following verses demonstrate that the Apostles will be judging in the kingdom:

"And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto Me; That ye may eat and drink at My table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Lk.22:29,30).

Here we read that His Apostles are told that they will "eat and drink" at His table in the kingdom, and at the Last Supper He told them that that will not happen until the kingdom of God shall come:

"And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come" (Lk.22:17.18).

If the kingdom is now in place then we would expect to see the Twelve Apostles sitting upon their thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. We would also expect to see the Twelve eating and drinking with the Lord Jesus at His table. But it is clear that this is not now happening.

Resurrection of the Just

The kingdom will not begin until after the resurrection of the just:

"And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years" (Rev.20:4).

It will not be until the resurrection of the just when those who will be "beheaded for the witness of Christ" will reign with Him a thousand years. It should be obvious to anyone with an open mind that those "beheaded" are not now reigning.

Promise to David

"The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; He will not turn from it: Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne" (Ps.132:11).

On the day of Pentecost the Apostle Peter referred to this oath, saying: "And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT {one} OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE" (Acts2:30;NASB).

Gabriel told Mary:"He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father, David. And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end" (Lk.1:32,33).

This Throne is an "earthly" throne: "Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly" (1Ki.2:12).

The following verse demonstrates that the Lord Jesus will rule from David's Throne in Jerusalem: "At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem" (Jer.3:17).

The prophet Ezekiel says that the Lord brought him to the "land of Israel" and was placed on a high mountain (Ez.40:2) where he saw a structure like a city on the south. Then he was brought to a "temple" (41:1) and its "inner court" (43:5) where the Lord spoke to him:

"And He said unto me, son of man, the place of My throne, and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places"  (Ez.43:7).

Here the Lord Jesus says that He will "dwell in the midst of the children of Israel". That fits perfectly with the prophecies of Ezekiel:

"And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob My servant…and will set My sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore" (Ez.37:25,26).

Zechariah next defines the dimensions of the city which he saw, and then says: "It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there" (Ez.48:35).

In the Kingdom men will go to Jerusalem to worship Him: "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one…And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain" (Zech.14:9,17).

Gary DeMar writes,"To be sure, dispensationalism is one of the many 'modern systems of divinity' in vogue today. And as we will see in our study of Matthew 24:14, dispensationalist commentators do not place themselves in the position of the sacred writers"  (DeMar,"The Gospel Preached to All the World", Part 1).

As we have shown, Gary DeMar is the one who does not place himself in the position of the sacred writers in regard to the location of the Throne of David..He cannot distinguish the throne of the Father from the throne of David.
